A 20-year-old man allegedly stabbed his grandfather to death during an argument as a family tried to stop their home from flooding during the heavy rains in KwaZulu-Natal.
Police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the grandfather was caught in the middle as the suspect was involved in an altercation with his father in Lotusville, Verulam on Saturday evening while the family frantically worked to prevent water from entering their house.
Netshiunda said:
The grandfather reportedly tried to intervene, and the 20-year-old allegedly picked up a knife and stabbed both his grandfather and his father. The grandfather succumbed to his injuries in hospital, while the father is [being treated for] his stab wounds in hospital.

On Monday, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), which issues daily weather warnings, said that it expected more rains affecting the uMzinyathi, uMkhanyakude and Zululand districts.
It said the heavy rains, accompanied by thunderstorms, could cause localised flooding.
Torrential rains claimed the lives of six people and displaced hundreds at the weekend. Cogta said the rainfall from the weekend wreaked havoc in the eThekwini Metro and the KwaDukuza and Ndwedwe local municipalities.
The eThekwini municipality closed public beaches and swimming pools as a result. The rains also disrupted power connectivity, affecting eThekwini and Stranger residents in the Kwadukuza municipality.
