A massive fire ripped through a warehouse in Johannesburg’s Amalgam industrial area in the early hours of Saturday morning, destroying the facility and causing extensive structural damage.
According to the City of Johannesburg’s emergency management services (EMS), firefighters were dispatched to the scene in Laanglaagte at around 02:00 after reports of a warehouse on fire.
EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said the blaze engulfed the entire 2 000-square-metre warehouse.
“[It] burned down completely, with exterior walls collapsing and the roof caving in.”
Despite the severity of the blaze, no injuries were reported.
Mulaudzi said emergency crews had worked to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby properties within the industrial precinct.
“Fire safety officers will be conducting fire investigations to determine what might be the cause of the fire incident,” he added.
The extent of the financial losses resulting from the fire has not yet been established.
The scene remains under assessment as investigators work to establish the circumstances surrounding the blaze.
